Clarity and Uncertainty

 In blog

Uncertainty is a part of life, isn’t it? Every team, organisation and person goes through uncertainty and needs to learn how to thrive under varying degrees of this scary concept regularly. What will the markets do today? Who will hit “like” this week? Is my role still relevant? Will you always love me?

But should this hijack us as we wade through the murkiness? Should this stop us at all? Is there a way to carry on?

We seem to live in a world where much is made of those who can navigate the tumultuous seas of uncertainty as gods among mere mortals. Those are the meta-humans we all want to hire; we all want to be like. In fact, I still remember the days I used to put on a cape and a U shaped mask, running around the house looking for pockets of uncertainty to conquer. NOT!

The question does beg: “What if uncertainty was just another part of life?” Why do we avoid something that seems to have no tangible effect on our plans? I am not talking about the psychological impact anxiety might bring, but rather that not knowing is simply that… not knowing.  We do that so often already don’t we: That perfect wedding day ruined by unpredictable weather. The team member falling ill for an important launch deadline. A cat video going viral for no real reason.

Getting clarity is a great way of keeping two feet firmly on the ground while everything else is up for grabs in a storm on complex uncertainty.

In his book “The Advantage”, Patrick Lencioni asks 6 great questions intended to create high performing teams and organisations. I’ve found these questions work really well in virtually every situation.

  1. Why do we exist?
  2. How do we behave?
  3. What do we do?
  4. How will we succeed?
  5. What is the most important thing right now?
  6. Who must do what?

As an individual, some of those questions might be a little tricky to answer, so these questions might be more helpful:

  1. What do I feel my purpose is?
  2. What have I achieved today that I would be grateful for in the future that I got done today?
  3. Who is around me right now I can count on?
  4. What is actually certain?

At Neumind we are able to help you get clarity around your vision and values, and help you navigate the uncertainty you may be facing in life, as a team or an individual. Please be in touch!
